SDG 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

The 16th SDG goal aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Goal 16 has ten targets that range from reducing violence and corruption to strengthening the rule of law and ensuring equal access to justice. Here's a closer look at some of the statistical information related to the targets of this goal:

Target 16.1 aims to significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates. According to the United Nations, in 2017, the global homicide rate was 6.1 per 100,000 people, and the rate of deaths due to conflict and terrorism was 13.9 per 100,000 people.

Target 16.2 aims to end abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all forms of violence and torture against children. According to UNICEF, an estimated 1 billion children have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional violence in the past year.

Target 16.3 aims to promote the rule of law, ensure equal access to justice, and reduce corruption. According to Transparency International's 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index, more than two-thirds of countries score below 50, indicating that corruption remains a significant issue globally.

Target 16.4 aims to significantly reduce illicit financial and arms flows, strengthen the recovery and return of stolen assets, and combat all forms of organized crime. According to the Global Financial Integrity report, illicit financial flows from developing countries were estimated to be between $1.1 trillion and $1.6 trillion in 2017.

Target 16.7 aims to ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory, and representative decision-making at all levels. According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, as of March 2021, women held 25.5% of seats in national parliaments worldwide.

Target 16.10 aims to ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements. According to the 2021 World Press Freedom Index, only 12% of the world's population lives in countries with a free press.

In order to achieve the targets of Goal 16, governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector must work together to promote peaceful and inclusive societies, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions. By implementing policies and programs that address violence, corruption, and inequality, we can create a more just and peaceful world for all.
