UCC and Queen’s University launch first all-island sustainability network

The University College Cork (UCC) and Queen’s University Belfast have recently announced the establishment of the first all-island sustainability network. The new network aims to bring together the expertise of both institutions in the field of sustainability and create a platform for sharing knowledge, research, and best practices.

The UCC and Queen’s University are two of the leading universities in Ireland and the UK, respectively, when it comes to sustainability. The new network will provide a unique opportunity for collaboration between the two institutions and help drive sustainability initiatives forward on a larger scale.

The network will focus on four key areas: sustainable cities and communities, sustainable food systems, climate action, and circular economy. These areas are crucial for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are in line with the European Union’s Green Deal.

The UCC’s Vice President for Research and Innovation, Professor Anita Maguire, said that the network is “an important milestone in developing an all-island approach to sustainability, bringing together expertise and knowledge from two leading institutions to drive innovation and impact.”

Similarly, Professor David Jones, Director of Queen’s University’s Sustainability Institute, added that “the establishment of this network is a testament to the commitment of both institutions to working collaboratively to tackle the major sustainability challenges facing society.”

The network has already planned several initiatives, including joint research projects, symposiums, and public engagement activities. The first major event, a symposium on sustainable food systems, is scheduled for later this year.
